The Soul Studio Story

Minister, musician, and writer.
Rev. Dr. Stephen P. West preaching
The musical preacher, in his element

Soul Studio is the ongoing work of the Rev. Dr. Stephen P. West, a United Methodist pastor, musician, and writer. What holds it together isn't a single book or album. It's a conviction he has carried through 36 years of ministry: that formation happens slowly, in real life, and that writing, music, and shared practice can open the door to God.

After serving eight pastoral appointments, Steve located to Birmingham, Alabama, where he and his beloved wife, the Rev. Sandy West, enjoy two adult children and a wonderful granddaughter.

As a worship leader shaped by many years with The Upper Room's Academy for Spiritual Formation, Steve has led music and worship at countless retreats and conferences, from Sumatanga and Junaluska to Iowa, Indiana, Florida, and even Singapore.

His first book, Something Happens Here, plunged into the depths of Wesley's communion spirituality to make a case for coming back to the table in order to move forward together. During divisive times, he was a nationally recognized voice in the Stay UMC movement. His writing has appeared in Alive Now, The Upper Room and Upper Room Disciplines, Worship & Song, Circuit Rider, Interpreter, and the Celebrating Grace Hymnal.

He is not retiring so much as redirecting. He enjoys serving as chaplain at Fair Haven Methodist Home for the Aging while launching Soul Studio for the next season.

“The Holy Spirit never quits. I am being called to a new adventure, for a new season of life. The best is yet to come.”
